Gonzo, art & effect.
Gonzo, art & effect. Originally popularized by Hunter S. Thompson and Ralph Steadman in approximately 1970; Gonzo as a form of art and journalism, has helped bring to light what effect the sixties had on american culture. Moreover, it also played a large part of the hippie movement in the 60's, during the evil reign of nixon. Gonzo as an illustrative art form alone, has helped define the ironic and depraved parts of it's subjects. Ralph Steadman's illustrations show true content to character; as his characters, and landscapes mirror their true personality. Hunter S. Thompson passed away in 2005, at his home in colorado. At his funeral, his ashes were sealed in a container, then shot out of a cannon some 300'ft in the air; the container then exploded spreading his ashes over his land. Ralph Steadman is living in england and currently working on erecting a Gonzo memorial in tennessee. He also does artwork for flying dog beer, has published several books, as well as has his website, (ralphsteadman.com). - R.T.G. |
